What to expect from your first treatment
Even if you’ve had massage before, you will need to come a few minutes early to fill out a health history form. This collects basic health and contact information for your clinical file.
Once we’re in the treatment room, don’t panic!! I will explain everything to you, and if you have any questions about literally anything to do with your treatment, please ask me. And trust me, I’ve heard it all – there are no silly questions. My goal is to help your body heal, and that happens best when you are relaxed. If there is anything I can say or do to make you comfortable I am happy to discuss that with you.
Typically we will start with a brief interview about your concerns and goals for treatment, followed by a physical assessment. That might happen before you get on the table or once you are settled. The table will be set with pillows and sheets for your comfort and privacy. As a massage therapist, we are trained in draping protocols so only the areas we are treating at that moment are exposed, thereby leaving you mostly covered on the table. Everything we do during the treatment is entirely under your control. If there is ever a moment where the treatment is painful, making you uncomfortable (on any level), or is just something you don’t want to do, you ALWAYS have the right to ask me to stop or change what I’m doing.
Depending on the type of treatment we have agreed on, lotion may or may not be used. If you have any sensitivities or allergies please let me know. If you are highly allergic to something that might be in the lotion (I use a grape seed base gel and no essential oils), you are always welcome to bring in a lotion or oil you know is safe for your body.
Another thing to keep in mind is the music I use. I do have a therapeutic playlist that is usually playing in the background to help you relax. However, as I have an eclectic taste in music myself, I totally understand that you may have an alternative musical preference that would help you relax more. If my music is not working for you, please let me know and we can see if there is something more suited to you. Alternatively, if you have an mp3 player or iPod (need auxiliary jack or Bluetooth capability) you are welcome to bring it in for your treatment!*
